Info for Pre-Reg Pharmacists

Your Pre-Reg year is in place and you are ready to put the knowledge gained during your degree into practice so that you are ready to join the profession.

You will have various standards to achieve and tasks to perform alongside your tutor. The Pharmaceutical Society NI is the regulatory body for Northern Ireland and is responsible for registering and regulating pharmacists.

Pre-Reg Pharmacists are encouraged to get involved with any events and opportunities for non-compulsory training during the training year, either events organised/supported by the UCA or those offered by other organisations. The UCA will share information with trainees directly via the email provided and through various media, such as the UCA Facebook page and official publication NI Pharmacy in Focus.

Current Pre-Reg Pharmacists receive a complimentary copy of the UCA’s official publication: NI Pharmacy in Focus which is the only dedicated pharmacy magazine in Northern Ireland. There are regular features, of interest to both trainee and tutor, in the Pre-Reg in Focus section. If you are not receiving your own copy, please get in touch as below.

The UCA Pre-Registration Pharmacist Training Programme is open to all Pre-Registration Pharmacists in Northern Ireland and takes place over eight days during the academic year. Speak to your Pre-Reg Tutor about non-compulsory training such as the UCA programme. The main aim of the UCA programme is to support the development of well-rounded pharmacists.

  • Supports tutor training by providing focussed learning
  • Opportunity to share good practice with fellow trainees
  • Guidance on effective and confident patient communication
  • Focus on gaining practical knowledge & experience
  • Complements compulsory training courses
  • Seminars delivered by expert speakers
  • Hands-on experience with medical devices and products
  • Puts clinical knowledge in to practice

All pre-regs in Northern Ireland are invited to this event, following the registration exam in mid-June. The popular seminar features presentations on applying for jobs, CV and interview skills, as well as insurance, working as a locum, personal & business finance, etc., plus topical issues. Pharmacies, academia and other colleagues also host information stands and are available to speak to trainees about various professional issues and career opportunities.
